5 surprising foods to eat for a healthy smile

Carrots, celery and apples are known teeth-friendly foods that scrub away plaque, stimulate saliva production and help fight against bad breath and decay. However, eating them every day is dull unless you’re a rabbit.
In honor of National Show Your Smile Month in May, Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas suggests five surprising foods that keep teeth and gums healthy. Consider it a spring gift for your mouth.
Onions
Kissing isn’t delightful immediately after eating onions, but the pungent vegetable is kind to the mouth.
“Chewing raw onions releases sulfur compounds, controlling harmful bacteria,” said Dr. Luz Mendoza, program manager in the dental college’s public health sciences department.
Eggs
Vitamin D in eggs helps the body absorb calcium, which is necessary for strong teeth, Mendoza said. Eggs also contain phosphorus, promoting both bone and tooth health, as well as protein for gum health and tissue development.
Turkey
Turkey is rich in phosphorus and protein as well.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes offer beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. Not having enough vitamin A can lead to a dry mouth and increased susceptibility to infections, Mendoza said.
Yogurt
Plain yogurt is rich in calcium and beneficial bacteria. It increases saliva production, which helps prevent cavities.
“Skip the sugar added in many yogurt brands,” she said.
Remember, no food replaces the dental benefits of brushing and flossing at least twice daily. In addition, visit the dentist twice a year.
