A cherished Aggie tradition received a toothy touch April 22 at Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas when three soon-to-graduate students received their class rings on campus. Caring for fellow Texans

Texas A&M College of Dentistry faculty and 40 dental, dental hygiene students and graduate students joined other dental providers April 10-11 to help nonprofit Texas Mission of Mercy provide necessary dental care to members of the North Texas community. Their volunteered efforts contributed to 817 patients receiving more than $900,000 in oral health care at no charge, according to information provided by TMOM. Read More

Researching for a healthier future

Students from all over Texas A&M College of Dentistry shared their latest research at the 51st Annual Student Scholars and Research Day on April 1. Led by Dr. L. Bruno Ruest, associate professor in biomedical sciences, and a team of faculty and staff, students presented topics ranging from the cost of social media on smiles to tooth movement with aligner changes. “Throughout this experience, I’ve learned the importance of clinical research in advancing the knowledge used to deliver the best possible care to patients," said Grayson Jennings, second-year dental student. "Research Scholars Day allows us to showcase the contributions of students, mentors and the College of Dentistry in pioneering health care innovation.” Read More

Recruiting future dentists

It's recruitment season, and faculty and alumni are on the road, encouraging students to apply to Texas A&M College of Dentistry. As part of what's called Texas Southern Swing Week, Texas universities last week hosted pre-health fairs for their undergraduates. Alicia Spence, director of recruitment and admissions at A&M Dentistry, traveled Feb. 17 to Texas A&M University's main campus in College Station and Feb. 18 to The University of Texas at Austin. College of Dentistry honors three faculty members

Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas recently presented faculty awards to Drs. Feng Tao, Rashmi Hegde and Janna Burnett. The awards are bestowed upon those who demonstrate strong leadership, professionalism, and a commitment to educating dental students, dental hygiene students, graduate students and specialists.  Each winner was nominated by the faculty. Awards were given Dec. 17 at George W. Bush Presidential Library during the A&M Dentistry annual faculty retreat. Read More

Expanding their skills

Several area dental assistants were on Texas A&M College of Dentistry's campus Nov. 15 for the hands-on portion and final day of continuing education to learn applications of pit and fissure sealants. It was the first time Texas A&M College of Dentistry offered the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners-approved course, and the first two sessions were interactive webinars earlier in the week. A lasting gift: Remembering those who donated for anatomical education

Texas A&M College of Dentistry faculty, students and staff took time out Oct. 20 on campus to remember and recognize the 25 people whose bodies were donated last year for dental college students' anatomical education. Dental assistants’ scope of care is broad and growing 

Numerous accounts of dental assisting’s roots as a profession credit New Orleans dentist C. Edmund Kells with employing his wife in 1885. So helpful was her work that he soon hired the first full-time assistant, Malvina Cueria, a teenager, in his practice.   While it may seem unimportant today, two women working in a dental office was revolutionary in the late-19th century. Convention dictated that women didn’t receive dental treatments without spousal permission, but the presence of two women in Kells’ office offered comfort and security to many women in his community. Kells’ helpers were so popular, other dentists soon advertised that “ladies in attendance” were working in their practices for the safety of female patients. Read More

College of Dentistry celebrates its 120th anniversary 

More than 100 faculty, staff, students and alumni in cowboy boots and finery gathered Oct. 3 to mark Texas A&M University College of Dentistry’s 120th anniversary with a Boots and Burs celebration. The name is a nod to the college’s Texas roots and recognition of the dental profession – a bur being a dental tool.  Proceeds from the event support expanding access to adult and pediatric dental care for underserved communities, scholarships and other initiatives.
