Pies for a cause: Students take aim for patients’ dental needs

Students came from all over campus Nov. 20 to throw pies in the faces of some of Texas A&M College of Dentistry’s popular professors. A bit of sweet fun during a semester full of tests and long study sessions, and all for a good cause.

Pies for Patients was organized by the second-year dental students. For $5 per pie, each student tossed a pie in a professor’s face, and each throw raised money for the Patient Fund account managed by A&M Dentistry’s Community Outreach Office. The fund aids those who’ve run out of money before their treatment is completed.

Students raised $507, said Caelan Ducommun, class vice president of the Class of 2028. That’s more money than the goal.

“We are looking for more creative initiatives from students and faculty to continue raising funds for this important cause,” said Dr. Hoda Abdellatif, the office’s director and clinical assistant professor in public health sciences.
