2016 Distinguished Alumnus
The award goes to Houston-area dentist Dr. Tommy Harrison ’79
For more than 30 years, Dr. Thomas “Tommy” Harrison has maintained a thriving practice while contributing to all levels of organized dentistry. This dedication, not only to his patients but also to his peers and profession, helped earn him the title of 2016 Distinguished Alumnus at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry.
Family and friends are never far away at the Katy, Texas, office of Harrison & Bethke Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. Harrison and lifelong friend Dr. Gary Garrison opened the joint practice in 1979 and worked together until 2007. Harrison needn’t go far to see family during the workday, as his wife, Mary Sue, is an audiologist who practices next door. One of the couple’s grown daughters even works at her practice.
Outside of the office, Harrison, a fellow of both the International and American College of Dentists, has served in many capacities, including:
- delegate, American Dental Association
- treasurer, American Dental Political Action Committee
- president, Texas Dental Association
- president, Greater Houston District Dental Society
- president, TAMBCD Alumni Association
News of the Distinguished Alumnus recognition for Harrison was announced during an alumni reception and general membership meeting on May 6 in San Antonio, which occurs in tandem with the Texas Dental Association annual session. Harrison will be formally honored during the 2016 homecoming reception on August 12 in Dallas.
