DH2 Isabella TrinhHometown: I was born in Houma, Louisiana, but I spent most of my childhood in Ashland, Massachusetts. The summer after high school, my family moved to Austin, Texas, to be closer to extended family. I still consider Massachusetts my home more than anything.

Undergrad institution: After high school, I took prerequisites at Austin Community College and I was accepted into the dental hygiene program here, so I consider my time here as my undergrad.

Why Texas A&M College of Dentistry: To be honest, I put all my eggs into one basket. I knew I would be spending a total of four years to earn my degree in dental hygiene, so I decided to apply to a school that would give me a bachelor’s degree.

Dental hygiene school success strategy: To balance between hours of studying for exams, requirements for clinic and seeing patients, I constantly remind myself that I prayed to be where I am today. Although the stress can be overwhelming at times, I am exactly where I want to be in life. One thing I have included in my routine to help me stay focused in dental hygiene school is to dedicate one day out of the week to relax and not study. Lastly, but most importantly, I have been blessed with an extremely supportive family and group of friends. My family has seen my struggles throughout hygiene school, and they pick me up every time something does not go according to plan. Their unconditional love and support has played an enormous role in my success. Along with family, being able to surround yourself with friends who know exactly what you’re going through plays a major role in such a rigorous program.

Favorite energy food: I wouldn’t necessarily call it “energy” food, but chocolate! I have a huge sweet tooth.

How you unwind after a long day in lecture, lab or clinic: Having clinic most of the week, it can take up a lot of my energy most days. But going out to eat with friends or working out after clinic helps me unwind after a long day.

Best dental hygiene school moment so far: The best dental hygiene school moment so far was attending the annual TDHA conference. Last year it was held in Galveston and normally takes place at the end of January or beginning of February. This year it was in San Marcos, and some of my classmates placed first and second place for their evidence-based research poster presentations. It’s always a pleasure to see my classmates’ hard work pay off. The annual conference allows hygiene students to network with other students, present research and attend the House of Delegates meeting.

Favorite patient care experience: I had the pleasure of treating a male in his 50s during the fall semester. I had multiple appointments with my patient and each time he came in for treatment, he would express how grateful he was for having the opportunity to be a patient at the school. I built a strong rapport with him, and he was able to open up to me about his financial struggles. This patient reminded me of why I love my career and how blessed I am to be at this school.

Goal after graduation: I plan to move back to Austin and hopefully work at a local private practice, along with providing dental work to underserved areas. I would also like to travel more during my free time.

What people may not know about you: I love trying new things. Whether it be food, places or new adventures, I am always open to go out and do something.
