TAMBCD School-Based Sealant Program

The Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry School-Based Sealant Program is off to a running start. In existence since 2000, TAMBCD’s sealant program is staffed by Dr. Stephen Crane and a team of fourth-year dental students, who provide free dental sealants to second- and third-graders in the Dallas area in efforts to minimize tooth decay.

As this year’s program gets underway, here’s a look at some 2014-2015 numbers to give you an idea of the impact of this initiative.

  • 75: Number of elementary schools TAMBCD partnered with to provide dental sealants.
  • In the U.S., 1 of 5 school children aged 5 to 11 has at least one untreated decayed tooth.
  • Dental disease is the most chronic disease among children, and Dallas County Independent School District officials say it is the leading cause of absences.
  • The TAMBCD sealant program served 2,712 Dallas-area school children during the 2014-2015 academic year.
  • Did you know? 4,504 is the number of teeth that were protected with sealants during the course of the school year.
  • L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary has the longest-running partnership with TAMBCD for the sealant program: 15 years.
