Smiles we remember: Dr. Antolino Colon Camacho
Dr. Antolino Colon Camacho, adjunct assistant professor in comprehensive dentistry, was known for a life of service in the U.S. Army, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and higher education.
The 74-year-old passed away Feb. 28 and was described as a “mentor and friend to everyone” by Dr. Sarah Parker Allen, assistant dean for curriculum in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry.
Colon started his career in the U.S. Army where he was a dental officer, serving the country for 10 years before being forced into medical retirement due to an injury. He dedicated the next 30 years of his life to treating veterans as a prosthodontist and then as chief of the North American Veteran Affairs Dental Medical Centers.
“He was able to use his time and professional talents to provide high level prosthodontic dental care to men and women who have served our great nation in the armed forces,” said Bernard Hennessy, interim department head of comprehensive dentistry. “And at a time when many people would consider retiring, Dr. Colon continued serving as a valued faculty member at Texas A&M University School of Dentistry.
“He was a popular faculty member with our students because he took the time to teach them the right way to provide treatment while mentoring them in a positive manner.”
Colon will be remembered for being generous with his knowledge and friendship.
