Surprise recognition

A simple lunch invitation wasn’t quite what it seemed for these two public health sciences faculty members.

When Drs. Amal Noureldin and Stephen Crane were invited to attend the American Muslim Women Physicians Association volunteer luncheon in Richardson, Texas, along with several dental students, they immediately scheduled the Nov. 2 event on their calendars.

The two public health sciences faculty members didn’t realize what awaited them.

“To my surprise, Dr. Crane and I were recognized and honored during the lunch for our volunteer work,” says Noureldin, assistant professor and the adviser of the Muslim Student Dental Association, which fills many of the volunteer slots for the AMWPA-sponsored health fairs. D3s and D4s assist MSDA members with the manpower necessary to staff the events, which provide dental and medical health services at metroplex Islamic community centers. Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry’s role includes exams and education for adults and sealants and fluoride treatments for children.

Noureldin and Crane, associate professor, oversee the student volunteers’ efforts at the events, which occur several Saturdays throughout the year.
