Talent show back with a bang

|

A longtime tradition was brought back April 10 with the revival of the School of Dentistry talent show. TAMSOD’s Got Talent brought together 13 acts and 23 performers for a night of entertainment at Beasley Auditorium. The talent show was put on hiatus in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was revived this year by the TAMSOD Music Society, Mental Health and Wellness Committee and Student National Dental Association.

“I am ecstatic and thankful for the massive success of this event,” said Emily Vu, Music Society president. “The show had a full turnout, and the energy that night was unparalleled. With the diverse and high caliber of talent we have at the dental school, combined with the heartwarming feedback from the judges and entertainment from our amazing emcees, this show was truly something special.”

The winners of the talent show are as follows:

  • 1st place and the Golden Buzzer award: Emily Vu (D3) and Nikki Vu (D1) with their piano/violin medley duet to Phantom of the Opera. This award was decided by popular vote with more than 130 responses. The duo won in a landslide, securing more than 50% of the votes.
  • 2nd place: Adam Davidson (D2), who sang Frank Sinatra’s “At Long Last Love.”
  • 3rd place (tie): Chantelle Harris (D3) with a lyrical dance. Matrix Band, an eight-member band made up of Chloe Nguyen (D4) on vocals, Marie Le (D3) on flute, Emily Vu (D3) on piano, Brandon Do (D3) on saxophone, Nikki Vu (D1) on violin, Eric Weidmann (D1) on electric bass, pathology resident Dr. Alberto Peraza on guitar and Vu’s father Quang Vu on drums. Matrix Band performed a cover of “Dancing in the Moonlight.”

“We had performers from all dental school classes and had acts from faculty and staff as well,” Vu said. “I hope that TAMSOD’s Got Talent continues to be a pillar of community and a celebration of all the talent we have outside of dentistry. I am already excited for planning next year’s event and have some great ideas to make it even bigger and better.”
