Furry friends at the library

They’re called man’s best friend for a reason!

Three weeks into the new semester, Texas A&M School of Dentistry and next-door neighbor Baylor University Medical Center organized a special treat for students: Dogs!

A trio of the hospital’s therapy dogs and their handlers stopped by the Baylor Health Sciences Library, a facility shared by the dental school and the hospital, Friday afternoon to give students a warm and fuzzy study break. The guests of honor included golden retrievers Caleb and Clover, and a Scottish terrier puppy named Louis, cared for by volunteers Linda Marler and Cindy North.

“The dogs really make a difference in people’s lives,” says Marler, who has been a program volunteer since 1989. “It’s good to share something you love with other people.”

“I started volunteering over 20 years ago with Linda,” North says. “I had a dog that was just drawn to strangers. I got into the Baylor program that way.” Clover is the fourth therapy dog she’s had in the program.

“We know school can be stressful, so we’re happy that the dogs could come by and help students relax a little,” says Dr. Ernestine Lacy, professor and associate dean of student affairs.

The dogs, busy receiving love and attention from a crowd of dental and dental hygiene students, declined to comment.
