Oral cancer: one woman’s journey

ADS “lunch and learn” presentation underscores impact of dental professionals in diagnosis

Oral and oropharyngeal cancers kill one person every hour of every day of the year. The survival rate for this disease hovers just around 60 percent, as there is currently no comprehensive screening program for oral cancer, just one reason that it is often discovered late in its development.

Such was the case for author Ilse Anderson, who will speak at Texas A&M College of Dentistry on April 24 about her journey to overcoming stage 4 oral cancer, the focus of her book, “Say Yes to Life.” Dr. John Wright, Regents Professor and department head of diagnostic sciences, also is a guest speaker.
