Two Texas A&M College of Dentistry dental students who participated in a 10-week summer research internship in 2024 had the opportunity to present their research projects at last week’s American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research conference in New York.
Duyen Le presented “Retrospective Study: SDF (silver diamine fluoride) Treatment Trends in Adult Dental School Care. Trends and Impact of SDF Applications in Adult Dental School Care.” Priyanka Suri presented “Cross-Sectional Analysis of SDF Application Across Dentition Stages.”
Both students were mentored by Dr. Amal Noureldin, clinical professor in public health sciences, and Dr. Luz “Lucy” Mendoza, program manager in public health sciences.
Hanna Burke, a neuroscience major at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, also interned at the dental college. Noureldin presented Burke’s work “Social Media Anti-Fluoride Campaigns: Impact on College Students’ Fluoride Perceptions” at the AADOCR conference and the American Dental Education Association Annual Session & Exhibition earlier this month in National Harbor, Maryland.
SDF is a topical liquid used to prevent cavities from growing and spreading, as well as to kill bacteria. Mendoza said it’s used to treat children, elderly patients – especially those in long-term care facilities – those with special needs, and patients with severe dental anxiety.
